A Proud Palavian – Rupali Repale Shares What Makes Palava City Special
I started swimming at a very early age. I remember my father taking me to a nearby pool every day where I would train for hours. My coach advised him to put me in competitive training. And then, it was a dream come true for all of us when I swam the English Channel at the age of 12. I then went on to swim 7 more straits in the next few years, and also made many new records and won prestigious awards. Swimming was what my life was centred around.
But over time, I lost touch with it. When I got married and had my first baby, I took a break from swimming and got busy with other things in life. My husband had booked our Palava home around the time we got married and I was really excited to visit Palava city by Lodha. I remember when I first came here, I was mesmerized by the sheer infrastructure. Having travelled to many foreign cities for swimming – I was pleasantly surprised to see something existed here in Mumbai that was like an International City.
Around 5 years back, when we moved to Palava city there was already a vibrant community here. People came together for festivals, sporting events and celebrated everything together. This sense of bonding and belonging was very heart-warming for us. And that’s probably why I said yes – when someone from the Lodha team asked me if I would be interested in coaching young swimmers. I wanted to give back to the community and this seemed like one of those moments – which you didn’t know you were waiting for. And yet when it comes along, it just – fits. And that’s how my Swimming academy was born.
We started with just a few kids and practised in the Clubhouse pool. Most of them were pursuing this as a hobby, but soon we realised that some of them were naturally gifted swimmers and with proper competitive training, they could do very well. So, we amped up our training. Soon, our swimmers were competing at District, State and National competitions and winning them too. And since then, there’s been no looking back.
Today, we have Olympic standard pool at the Olympic Sports complex at Palava, which is an absolute dream to train in for any athlete. There is nothing like this anywhere in this region and I think the Palavians as we proudly call ourselves, are really lucky to be living in Palava. We have trained close to a thousand students over the last 6 years and produced over a hundred champion swimmers who have participated across world championships and have created many records ever since.
I think, the state-of-the-art infrastructure that the city provides has built a culture of sports and fitness here, and has played a crucial role in making this happen. The academies and the coaches ensure that your talent is steered in the right direction.
Often, the reason why many athletes give up on their dreams is availability, proximity and affordability of such sports facilities. So, I feel it will be nice to see more places imbibe this culture that has played a crucial role in making all of this happen. You know, when an entire community comes together for sporting events and celebrates the achievements together – that’s the kind of environment that breeds future sports stars.
